Cushing's Syndrome – Osteoporosis (Rad) Fig. 23.13 Cushing's syndrome: osteoporosis and vertebral fractures. Cushing's syndrome, when severe, results in generalised osteoporosis and this lateral film of the lumbar spine shows the typical appearance. The bone density is reduced and the cortical margins of the bones are thin. There is marked collapse of the body of the first lumbar vertebra, with marginal condensation of the superior borders of the bodies of the second and third. In the dorsal spine multiple vertebral fractures may lead to a pronounced kyphosis. It should be noted that the radiological appearances of osteoporosis affecting the spine are similar whatever the cause. See also: • Cushing's Syndrome •ÊOsteoporosis
